Lilian Chiwera

Lilian Chiwera is an independent Surgical Site Infection (SSI) surveillance & prevention expert with experience setting up and coordinating a very successful SSI surveillance service at Guys & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). Passionate about improving patient safety and experience. 


Former member of the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Scientific Programme Committee (SPC), Former IPS Education & Professional Development Committee member, former IPS Deputy Treasurer. She is a member of Hospital Infection Society (HIS) Guidelines Development Committee. 


Lilian was a member of the National Institute of Care Excellence (NICE) SSI quality standard Topic Expert Group (TEG) in 2013. Presented SSIS work at various local & international conferences including at previous Infection Prevention Society (IPS) conferences and on behalf of NICE. Lilian has been a finalist for various Awards for her work in SSI prevention.

Nightingale Nurse Award 2019. Part of Dame Sills Team (Infection control) of the year Award 2019. Winner of the best IPS poster award in 2013. Finalist Kings Health partners conference 2015 & 2017. Finalist for Nursing Times Awards 2014, 2016 & 2017; Finalist Patient Safety Awards 2017, Finalist NICE Shared Learning Awards 2017.


MSc in Infection Prevention and Control, Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing studies, BSc. Honours degree in Applied Biology and Biochemistry, specialising in Microbiology.  Extensive experience in critical care nursing, quality assurance and microbiology in pharmaceutical industries. Various clinical, infection control and allied health care courses. Florence Nightingale Leadership Development course.
