Tom Evans, MD

Tom Evans, MD, is President and CEO of the Compass Healthcare Collaborative.  He received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Drake University.  He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines. He practiced family medicine for 13 years before serving as chief medical officer for the Iowa Health System. In 2005, he founded the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) to focus on sustainable healthcare transformation in Iowa and the nation.  With IHC’s broadening scope of regional and national influence, they became Compass Healthcare Collaborative in 2024. 


Dr. Evans has served as president of both the Iowa Medical Society and the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. He is a delegate with the American Medical Association (AMA) and has served on the boards of the National Patient Safety Foundation and Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Dr. Evans is a faculty member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and teaches courses in both strategy and healthcare improvement at the University of Iowa College of Public Health.  He is a recognized national impact leader in healthcare performance improvement, patient safety, and patient and family engagement.
